چکیده

From preliminary studies of the feeding value for mediumwool Merino wethers of various samples of sorghum silage, the following points emerge : 1. Mature silage, in addition to being moderately unpalatable, had a low level of digestible protein, a variable digestible crude fibre and a high mineral content. In spite of the latter, most sheep had negative mineral balances. A feature of the ash content of all samples of silage was the high concentration of silica. 2. Young sorghum silage was much more palatable. The addition of molasses made little difference either to palatability or to any digestible nutrient, except that it appeared to lower the protein digestibility coefficient. 3. Supplementation of mature sorghum silage with nitrogen, either in non-protein or protein form, effectively rectified the nitrogen balance and, in some instances, resulted in higher silage consumption. 4. The addition of a balanced mineral mixture led to improved appetite and marked increases in crude fibre and protein digestibility.

The Effect of Urea Supplementation of High Grain Rations on the Metabolism of Fatty Acids in the Rumen of Sheep and Cattle

When rations containing, basically, sorghum grain were supplemented with urea, it was found that the urea affected the concentrations of certain fatty acids in the rumen and depot fat. On a ration of grain/sorghum silage similarly supplemented, isovaleric acid increased. There was a small affect of urea on the level of linoleic acid in the rumen of sheep which, however, was not significant at t...

Ingestive Behavior of Heifers Feeding with Marandu Grass Silage

The present study was aimed at assessing the ingestive behavior of ¾ Zebu × Holstein heifers confined to different levels of substitution of sorghum silage by marandu grass silage. Twenty heifers were used with initial average weight of 346.25 kg, divided into completely randomized experimental design with 5 repetitions and the following treatments: treatment 1) roughage fraction of the diet co...

Comparison of brown midrib-6 and -18 forage sorghum with conventional sorghum and corn silage in diets of lactating dairy cows.

Total mixed rations containing conventional forage sorghum, brown midrib (bmr)-6 forage sorghum, bmr-18 forage sorghum, or corn silage were fed to Holstein dairy cows to determine the effect on lactation, ruminal fermentation, and total tract nutrient digestion. Sixteen multiparous cows (4 ruminally fistulated; 124 d in milk) were assigned to 1 of 4 diets in a replicated Latin square design wit...

The effects of a microbial inoculant and formic acid as silage additives on chemical composition, ruminal degradability and nutrient digestibility of corn silage in sheep

The effects of a microbial inoculant (containing propionic and lactic acid bacteria) and formic acid onchemical composition, ruminal degradability of dry matter (DM) and nutrient digestibility of corn silage wereexamined. Whole-plant corn was ensiled for 60 days in plastic polyethylene bags, and three treatments werecompared, 1: control (no additive), 2: Propionibacterium acidipropionici plus L...

Id # 19-24 High Moisture Sorghum Grain Silage: Effects of Tannin Content and Urea Treatment on the Performance of Dairy Cows

Grain sorghum silage tannin content effect was evaluated on milk production and chemical composition of Argentinean Holstein bred cows, and it are described dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) in situ digestion parameters and effective degradability. The base diet was constituted by alfalfa pasture, maize silage, and a protein – mineral supplement, differing in three treatments based on high...
